Al-Azhar Mosque meets layered images of Ramesses II, battle scenes and river craft in this colourful fifty-piastre composition.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Al-Azhar Mosque fills the face with domes, minarets and arcades in green, purple, yellow and orange. Arabic text and serial numbers cross the upper field, while the fifty-piastre value sits within dark ornamental medallions. The open watermark reserve leaves the architecture legible despite the surrounding security pattern.

Reverse

Ramesses II appears in a battle carving and in the granite statue from Turin's Museo Egizio, holding the heka crook. A reed-boat prow, stylized papyrus and the ruler's cartouche link the two images across the field. English text and value panels complete a compact synthesis of royal and Nile-associated motifs.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this January 2008 note belongs to the final El Okda stage of a familiar fifty-piastre design. Its interest lies in the modernization of an established type, making it a useful bridge between earlier paper varieties and Egypt's later revised low-denomination issues. It records continuity as the series adopted newer production details.
