ThemeCultural Heritage

Kristjan Raud's lined face and Tallinn's castle emerge in brown, giving the smallest kroon note a compact cultural and civic setting.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The portrait belongs to Kristjan Raud, the painter, educator and museum figure whose name and life dates accompany the image. Close facial detail contrasts with the large numeral and comparatively spare lettering. At this scale, the note does not attempt to reproduce an artwork; it gives the artist himself a recognisable place in the first restored-kroon family.

Reverse

Toompea Castle extends across the reverse, with Tall Hermann providing its most recognisable vertical feature. The tower is repeated more discreetly in the watermark, connecting the visible architectural subject with an image seen only through the paper. The view moves the note from an individual contributor to the built setting of Estonia's public institutions.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this one-kroon denomination belongs to the currency reform of 20 June 1992, when Estonia restored its own money after the Soviet period. Its Otsason / Hagelberg signatures and artist portrait place it in that opening issue, whose smallest banknote value pairs a cultural figure with the parliamentary seat at Toompea.
