ThemeReligious Heritage

Dark brown, orange and lilac engraving links Georgia’s capital with one of the country’s great medieval monuments, pairing old Tbilisi and Mount Mtatsminda with the rock-cut complex of Vardzia.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse combines a view of old Tbilisi with Mount Mtatsminda rising behind the city, while the equestrian monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali appears within the urban panorama. Georgian inscriptions and the denomination are set into a dense ornamental framework, with the serial number occupying the upper-right field and a broad decorative panel balancing the cityscape at left.

Reverse

The reverse presents the rock-cut Vardzia cave monastery in the side of the Erusheti mountain near Aspindza, with its monumental arched structure and excavated chambers dominating the composition. Large denomination devices and geometric ornament frame the architectural landscape, giving the reverse a strong sense of Georgia’s medieval religious and cultural heritage.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this 10 Kuponi belongs to Georgia’s first 1993 coupon series, a short-lived monetary period that lasted only until 1995. The denomination is especially representative of the series because it brings together two very different expressions of Georgian identity: the historic capital of Tbilisi on one side and the medieval cave complex of Vardzia on the other.
