Red and orange engraving gives the one-million-kuponi note an emphatic symbolic presence, combining Samtavisi Cathedral ornament with the Borjgali solar motif at the extreme end of Georgia’s coupon-era denomination scale.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse centres the Borjgali between two griffins adapted from carvings at Samtavisi Cathedral, with a Tree of Life motif incorporated into the surrounding decoration. Georgian inscriptions, the date 1994 and the enormous 1,000,000 denomination dominate the lower field, while the pale watermark area and vertical grey strip at left balance the densely ornamented central design.

Reverse

The reverse is arranged vertically around the large 1,000,000 denomination, bordered on both sides by stylised grape-vine carvings derived from Samtavisi Cathedral. Mirrored red vegetal ornament creates a highly decorative composition in which medieval stone-carving motifs frame the face value itself as the dominant visual element.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the one-million-kuponi note represents the culmination of Georgia’s rapidly escalating coupon denominations and is one of the clearest monetary artefacts of the instability immediately preceding the introduction of the lari in 1995. Its extraordinary face value makes it a particularly effective endpoint for a chronological kuponi collection, while a reported replacement form beginning with serial digit 9 remains a separate, unconfirmed specialist variety.
