Purple and red engraving combines medieval Georgian ornament with the Borjgali solar symbol, giving the high-value 20,000 Kuponi a strongly emblematic character within the final phase of the coupon currency.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse centres the Borjgali between two griffins adapted from carvings at Samtavisi Cathedral, with a Tree of Life motif incorporated into the surrounding ornament. Georgian inscriptions, the date 1994 and the large 20,000 denomination occupy the lower field, while the pale watermark area at left and a narrow vertical grey strip distinguish the composition from the preceding 1993 issue.
Reverse
The reverse is arranged vertically around the large 20,000 denomination, bordered on both sides by stylised grape-vine carvings derived from Samtavisi Cathedral. The mirrored vegetal ornament and restrained purple palette create a decorative composition in which medieval stone-carving motifs become the principal visual subject.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1994 continuation is especially useful for tracing the final development of Georgia’s ornamental kuponi series. The printed 1994 date and vertical grey strip beside the watermark area clearly separate it from the earlier 1993 form, making the two issues a natural matched pair in a specialised collection.
