Blue engraving marks a decisive visual break from Georgia’s earlier 1993 coupon issues, replacing the repeated Tbilisi–Vardzia programme with medieval ornament from Samtavisi Cathedral and the solar Borjgali symbol.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse centres a large Borjgali, the traditional Georgian solar motif, flanked by two griffins adapted from carved decoration at Samtavisi Cathedral. A Tree of Life motif is incorporated into the composition, while Georgian inscriptions, the year 1993 and the large 250 denomination are arranged within a restrained blue ornamental framework.

Reverse

The reverse is arranged vertically around the large 250 denomination, bordered on both sides by stylised grape-vine carvings derived from Samtavisi Cathedral. The mirrored vegetal ornament creates a highly decorative composition in which medieval stone-carving motifs replace the architectural landscapes used on Georgia’s earlier kuponi notes.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 250 Kuponi opens a markedly different design phase within Georgia’s 1993 coupon currency, introducing the fourth issue designed by Nodar and Bachana Malazonia. Its reliance on medieval Georgian carving and symbolic ornament makes it immediately distinguishable from the earlier Tbilisi–Vardzia types, while a reported one-sided printing error and replacement notes beginning with serial digit 9 form separate specialist varieties.
