Purple, orange and lilac engraving links old Tbilisi and Mount Mtatsminda with the medieval cave complex of Vardzia, continuing the architectural identity of Georgia’s second 1993 coupon issue.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse combines a view of old Tbilisi with Mount Mtatsminda rising behind the city and the equestrian monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali within the urban panorama. Georgian inscriptions and the three-kuponi denomination are integrated into an ornate purple framework, while the serial and fractional prefix occupy the upper-right field above the cityscape.
Reverse
The reverse presents the Vardzia cave monastery carved into the Erusheti mountain near Aspindza, with its rock-cut chambers and monumental arched structure dominating the central field. Purple and orange geometric borders frame the landscape, while the denomination at right balances the architectural scene and reinforces the highly structured design.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 3 Kuponi belongs to Georgia’s second 1993 coupon issue and is identified by the denominator 2 in the fractional prefix, distinguishing it from the preceding series. Replacement notes use denominator 10 instead, creating a separate specialist variety within the short-lived kuponi system that was replaced by the lari in 1995.
