Brownish-red and orange engraving combines medieval Georgian ornament with the Borjgali solar symbol, giving the 30,000 Kuponi a distinctive emblematic identity within Georgia’s final coupon issues.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse centres the Borjgali between two griffins adapted from carvings at Samtavisi Cathedral, with a Tree of Life motif incorporated into the surrounding decoration. Georgian inscriptions, the date 1994 and the large 30,000 denomination occupy the lower field, while the pale watermark area and narrow vertical grey strip at left distinguish the layout from the preceding 1993 issue.

Reverse

The reverse is arranged vertically around the large 30,000 denomination, bordered on both sides by stylised grape-vine carvings derived from Samtavisi Cathedral. Mirrored vegetal ornament creates a highly decorative composition in which medieval stone-carving motifs replace conventional landscapes or portraiture.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 30,000 Kuponi belongs to the 1994 continuation of Georgia’s ornamental coupon series, when the preceding medieval-inspired designs were retained but updated with a new date and the distinctive grey stripe beside the watermark area. As one of the highest values of the short-lived kuponi system, it illustrates the rapid denomination escalation that characterised Georgia’s monetary transition before the lari arrived in 1995; replacement notes beginning with serial digit 9 form a separate variety.
