Reddish-brown, orange and lilac engraving links old Tbilisi and Mount Mtatsminda with the medieval cave complex of Vardzia, continuing the architectural identity of Georgia’s second 1993 coupon issue.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse combines a view of old Tbilisi with Mount Mtatsminda rising behind the city and the equestrian monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali within the urban panorama. Georgian inscriptions and the five-kuponi denomination are integrated into an ornate reddish-brown framework, while the serial and fractional prefix occupy the upper-right field above the cityscape.
Reverse
The reverse presents the Vardzia cave monastery carved into the Erusheti mountain near Aspindza, with its rock-cut chambers and monumental arched structure dominating the central field. Orange and lilac geometric borders frame the landscape, while the denomination at right balances the architectural scene and reinforces the highly structured design.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 5 Kuponi belongs to Georgia’s second 1993 coupon issue and continues the denominator-2 system that distinguishes this group from the preceding series. The possible replacement form with denominator 10 is reported separately, giving specialists an additional attribution point within a currency that circulated for only a brief period before the introduction of the lari in 1995.
