Blue, orange and lilac engraving links the historic capital of Tbilisi with the monumental cave complex of Vardzia, presenting urban and medieval Georgia within one compact design.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse combines a view of old Tbilisi with Mount Mtatsminda rising behind the city, while the equestrian monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali appears within the urban panorama. Georgian inscriptions and the 50-kuponi denomination are integrated into an ornate blue framework, with the serial number set above the cityscape and a broad decorative panel balancing the composition at left.
Reverse
The reverse presents the Vardzia cave monastery carved into the side of the Erusheti mountain near Aspindza, with its rock-cut chambers and monumental arched structure dominating the central field. Blue and orange geometric borders frame the landscape, while large denomination devices at right reinforce the strongly architectural character of the design.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 50 Kuponi forms a natural companion to the 10 Kuponi of Georgia’s first 1993 coupon series, reusing the same Tbilisi–Vardzia design at a higher denomination. Regular notes use the digit “1” in the denominator, while the replacement form with “10” creates a distinct specialist variety within this short-lived monetary issue.
