Blue, orange and lilac engraving links old Tbilisi and Mount Mtatsminda with the medieval cave complex of Vardzia, carrying the familiar architectural programme into Georgia’s second 1993 coupon issue.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse combines a view of old Tbilisi with Mount Mtatsminda rising behind the city and the equestrian monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali within the urban panorama. Georgian inscriptions and the 50-kuponi denomination are integrated into an ornate blue framework, while the serial and fractional prefix occupy the upper-right field above the cityscape.

Reverse

The reverse presents the Vardzia cave monastery carved into the Erusheti mountain near Aspindza, with its rock-cut chambers and monumental arched structure dominating the central field. Blue and orange geometric borders frame the landscape, while the denomination at right balances the architectural scene and preserves the strongly structured appearance shared across the series.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 50 Kuponi is part of Georgia’s second 1993 coupon issue, distinguished from the earlier series by the denominator 2 in the fractional prefix. Because the same Tbilisi–Vardzia artwork appears across multiple denominations and both 1993 generations, comparing value, colour and prefix structure becomes central to building a complete kuponi type set; replacement notes with denominator 10 form a separate specialist variety.
