Green, orange and lilac engraving links old Tbilisi and Mount Mtatsminda with the medieval cave complex of Vardzia, preserving the architectural identity of Georgia’s first kuponi series at a much higher denomination.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse combines a view of old Tbilisi with Mount Mtatsminda rising behind the city, while the equestrian monument to King Vakhtang Gorgasali appears within the urban panorama. Georgian inscriptions and the large 5000-kuponi denomination are integrated into an ornate green framework, with the serial number placed above the cityscape and a decorative panel balancing the composition at left.

Reverse

The reverse presents the Vardzia cave monastery carved into the side of the Erusheti mountain near Aspindza, with its rock-cut chambers and monumental arched structure dominating the central field. Green and orange geometric borders frame the landscape, while large denomination devices at right reinforce the strongly architectural character of the design.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 5000 Kuponi shows how Georgia’s first 1993 coupon series reused the same Tbilisi–Vardzia design across widely separated denominations, making colour and value central to distinguishing the related notes. As part of the short-lived kuponi currency replaced in 1995, it also represents a particularly brief transitional chapter in modern Georgian monetary history.
