Ghana's independence leaders face the University of Ghana, carrying a blue five-cedi design from political memory into education.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The six leaders associated with Ghanaian independence—Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Odarkwei Obetsebi-Lamptey and William Ofori Atta—stand beside the Independence Square arch. Gold bars, a star and the national emblem complete the blue face, crossed by a GHANA 5 windowed thread.
Reverse
The University of Ghana tower, Department of Economics building and Balme Library form an architectural group across the back. A campus artwork and stacked gold bars add smaller points of interest, while English text and denomination figures organize the surrounding space. The academic setting offers a forward-looking counterpart to the independence-era portraits on the face.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the date 1 July 2015 and QM to SN prefixes place this variety late in the original five-cedi series. Henry Kofi Wampah signs it, and the left serial number uses the sans-serif style introduced under his governorship. The watermark combines Tetteh Quarshie, a cocoa pod, cornerstones and electrotype 5.
