Warm red engraving brings the Rock, a royal portrait and the Convent's long façade into a compact Gibraltar panorama.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Elizabeth II occupies the right of the face, wearing the Kokoshnik tiara and a broad festoon necklace. Across the opposite side, the Rock is viewed from the sea to the west, with Gibraltar's castle-and-key arms below. Red scrollwork surrounds the brown portrait and landscape.
Reverse
The Convent's long façade occupies the reverse, with rows of windows, arches and a flag above the roof. Formerly a Franciscan convent, the building has served as the Governor's official residence since 1728. Its domestic scale contrasts with the steep outline of the Rock on the face.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the printed date 4 August 1988 identifies P-20e within a design family first dated 1975. Brian Traynor also signed the 1983 and 1986 printings, so the signature alone does not settle the variety. A dated sequence of these pound notes records repeated use of the same portrait and Convent design.
