Kaieteur Falls remains the natural anchor of this long-lived 20 Dollars design, while shipbuilding and the MV Malali ferry give the reverse a distinctly Guyanese river-transport character.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse retains the established arrangement of Kaieteur Falls at right, the Bank of Guyana emblem beneath the denomination and broad ornamental devices at the margins. Pastel underprinting softens the dark purple-brown engraving, while the upper-right serial number grows progressively from left to right, preserving one of the most recognisable features of the post-1996 series.

Reverse

The reverse juxtaposes a ship under construction inside an industrial yard with the ferry MV Malali approaching port facilities. Rather than treating transport as a single object, the design follows the vessel from manufacture to practical service, reflecting the continuing importance of river crossings and maritime infrastructure within Guyana.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2018 issue shows the remarkable longevity of a design first introduced more than two decades earlier. By this stage the type had accumulated several signature combinations, printer changes and serial-number treatments, so the later issues provide a useful endpoint for comparing how an essentially unchanged design evolved through small but catalogue-significant production differences.
