ThemeMilitary & Historical Events

A seated seamstress bends over Haiti's flag, her small, deliberate gesture enclosed by green engraving and pale washes of colour.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Catherine Flon is pictured sewing the Haitian flag, a scene associated with the Congress of Arcahaie on 18 May 1803. Her seated figure occupies the centre of an ornate frame, with the bank's name above and the denomination below. The flag is shown in the making, held across her lap.

Reverse

The national arms gather flags, cannon, an anchor and musical instruments around a palm tree. Held within a shaped white cartouche, this dense group contrasts with the single working figure on the face. Large denomination numerals and looping green ornament flank the emblem; flags recur here as part of a completed heraldic composition.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this is the 1999 printing of the earlier Catherine Flon design, before the reworked 10-gourde note dated 2000. The two can be mistaken for one another because they share the same subject. The older layout, 1999 date and Jean–Pierre–Cassion signature combination identify this stage of the denomination's development.
