The Citadelle's steep walls rise inside a small oval, compressing a mountain stronghold into a densely ornamented blue field.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Citadelle Laferrière dominates the central vignette, its masonry rising above the slopes of Bonnet à l'Évêque near Milot. The fortress's angled walls are densely engraved in blue, framed by scrollwork over pale orange and green underprinting. Paired denomination panels flank this compact view of the mountain stronghold.

Reverse

A palm tree rises from Haiti's national arms, surrounded by cannon, flags, an anchor, a drum and a bugle. The emblem occupies the same central position as the fortress on the face. Its tightly arranged military and maritime objects replace the obverse landscape, enclosed by dark blue ornament.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 1992 two-gourde note belongs to the revised issues that omitted the earlier promise of payment at five gourdes to the US dollar. Its small denomination and compact format distinguish it from the larger portrait notes. The Claude–Benjamin–Thébaud signatures place this printing within that specific revision, rather than an undated continuation.
