ThemeMilitary & Historical Events

Purple and red surround General Cappoix, while the rough walls of Fort Jalousière carry the martial story onto the reverse.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

General François Cappoix appears in uniform, with soldiers and a cannon extending the portrait into a battlefield scene. The national arms and flag accompany inscriptions in both French and Haitian Creole. A vertical holographic strip separates the illustrated panel from the pale area beside the denomination.

Reverse

Fort Jalousière at Marmelade fills the reverse with surviving walls and irregular stonework. The military subject continues without a portrait: the fortification itself is the principal image. Purple shading picks out its rough surfaces, with red ornament and denomination text in French and Haitian Creole around the scene.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2023 date is a later printing of the design introduced for Haiti's 2004 independence bicentenary, not a new anniversary issue. Its Dubois–Fils–Gabriel signatures separate it from the original release. The long continuation of the commemorative artwork makes date and signature collecting useful alongside a straightforward set of independence personalities.
