Bethlen's solitary portrait gives way to a gathering around an open book, with brown engraving linking princely authority and learned conversation.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Gábor Bethlen, Prince of Transylvania, faces across the note from the right. The crowned Hungarian arms and a stylised plan of the Nagyvárad fortress fill the space beside him. A tulip changes from gold to green as the paper tilts, beside the densely engraved clothing of the prince.
Reverse
Viktor Madarász's painting of Bethlen among scholars provides the reverse scene. Seated figures gather around an open book, with other volumes and furniture filling the interior. Bethlen appears here among his learned companions, in contrast to the isolated portrait on the face; the brown palette is retained across both sides.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-204(2) distinguishes the three-signature 2025 printing from the four-signature version bearing the same year. Mihály Varga replaces György Matolcsy as governor, accompanied by Mihály Patai and Barnabás Virág. The familiar Bethlen imagery therefore conceals a clearly defined administrative change: counting the signatures matters before assigning the 2025 variety.
