Scholar Arngrímur Jónsson holds a book before a domestic reading scene, joining Iceland's learned tradition with knowledge shared at home.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Arngrímur Jónsson lærði appears in ruffled collar and cape, holding a book against a finely engraved blue field. Icelandic inscriptions and denomination figures frame the seventeenth-century scholar without competing with his portrait. The solid thread and pale Jón Sigurðsson watermark introduce two quieter vertical elements into the compact design.
Reverse
An old Icelandic family gathers around a fire to read, surrounded by household objects that place the book within everyday domestic life. Blue engraving gives the room a subdued, intimate atmosphere. The scene extends the scholar's portrait into a wider account of literacy, memory and knowledge carried between generations.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the fourth signature stage combines Jóhannes Nordal and Guðmundur Hjartarson, both governors of the Central Bank of Iceland. The note retains the printed legal date 29 March 1961, although the family entered circulation in 1981. Signature placement distinguishes this variety more reliably than the unchanged scholar and family-reading artwork.
