Mounted shepherds gather sheep beneath Hekla, spreading movement across a green landscape that answers Tryggvi Gunnarsson's still, close-set portrait.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Tryggvi Gunnarsson's portrait fills the left side, with houses and the cathedral tower at Hólar í Hjaltadal extending across the lower field. The low roofs sit beneath the bank's lettering, while the tower rises above them. Blue-green engraving is used for both the portrait and the settlement.
Reverse
Riders on horseback drive a flock of sheep across open ground, with Hekla rising behind them. The sheep spread across the foreground in small, repeated forms; the mounted figures stand higher among them. In contrast to the roofs and cathedral on the face, the reverse depicts rural work in an open volcanic landscape.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the date 29 March 1961 records the note's legal authority, not the printing date of this signature variety. Davíð Ólafsson and Jóhannes Nordal identify P-44a(6). It belongs to the earlier króna currency, before the 1981 redenomination, making the unaltered legal date a poor guide to the sequence of actual issues.
