ThemePortraits & People

Jón Sigurðsson appears twice in red engraving, first as a public figure and then absorbed in writing at his desk.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Jón Sigurðsson, a leading figure in Iceland's independence movement, is surrounded by a red ornamental border. Its main pattern draws on a tapestry that belonged to him, so the decoration has a specific connection to the portrait. The frame follows that of the Landsbanki 500-króna note first issued in 1944.

Reverse

At his desk, Sigurðsson sits among books, an inkwell and a lamp, replacing the public portrait with the material surroundings of his work. Reykjavík Grammar School stretches across the lower right; parliament met there during his lifetime. Personal possessions and a parliamentary meeting place bring his writing and political activity into the same scene.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 1 July 2019 legal date and Ásgeir Jónsson's single signature distinguish this printing, catalogued as introduced in 2025. The red design reaches back to 1981 and was upgraded in 2005. Its unchanged principal imagery can therefore span different legal dates, signature arrangements and security generations within a carefully assembled sequence.
