Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Khomeini and the prominent numeral 1 registration device share the obverse with Farsi inscriptions. Green, blue, red and purple tones keep the familiar portrait visually connected to the redesigned denomination feature. A predominantly green, blue, red, and purple treatment gives the imagery and official lettering a consistent visual register.

Reverse

The reverse combines calligraphy from Hafez’s Ghazal 11 with the Tomb of Hafez in Shiraz. English and Farsi inscriptions and the numeral 1 registration device complete a composition built around the poet’s written and architectural legacy. The green, blue, red, and purple palette provides continuity between the illustration, typography and value numerals.
