A scene recalling the liberation of Khorramshahr faces the Kaaba at Mecca, placing modern national history beside one of Islam’s central sacred sites.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse depicts the liberation of Khorramshahr beneath Farsi inscriptions, with purple, olive-green and brown tones giving the historical scene a sober character. The imagery makes a modern national event the front’s defining subject. The purple, olive green, and brown palette provides continuity between the illustration, typography and value numerals.
Reverse
The Kaaba at the Holy Mosque in Mecca dominates the reverse, accompanied by English and Farsi inscriptions. Its solemn religious imagery creates a deliberate contrast with the modern historical narrative on the front. Its purple, olive green, and brown tonality carries evenly through the subject, inscriptions and denomination markings.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, few Iranian circulation notes combine modern national history and sacred geography as directly as this design. The liberation scene and the Kaaba create two very different forms of collective memory on one banknote, giving the type particular depth for historical and religious thematic collections.
