ThemeReligious Heritage

Friday Prayer at Qom’s Feyziye seminary meets the formal entrance to Tehran University, placing communal religion opposite academic architecture.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse centres on the Feyziye seminary and a large Friday Prayer gathering, framed by Farsi inscriptions. A bird-and-flower registration device adds a smaller decorative motif to the otherwise strongly architectural and human scene. Its gray and olive green tonality carries evenly through the subject, inscriptions and denomination markings.

Reverse

A view of Tehran University’s main entrance gives the reverse its principal subject. English and Farsi inscriptions surround the building, with the companion bird-and-flower registration device maintaining continuity with the obverse. Colour is led by gray and olive green, extending from the main motif through the surrounding printed detail.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, later examples of this 500-rial type are a useful reminder that banknote history is not always driven by new artwork. The continuing Qom-and-Tehran composition shows how certain designs became long-lived visual fixtures, making a chronological group more revealing than any single note viewed in isolation.
