King Hussein's checked headcloth gives way to the low vaults of Qusayr Amra, both drawn in warm, close-toned brown engraving.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
King Hussein wears a kuffiyeh secured by an agal, the patterned cloth contrasting with the smooth modelling of his face. Arabic inscriptions and interlaced decoration fill the adjacent panel. A small vase motif repeats across the two sides as a registration device, bringing a recognisable object into the fine ornament surrounding the royal portrait.
Reverse
The barrel vaults of Qusayr Amra stretch across the reverse, accompanied by a deer and the matching vase motif. This early-eighth-century Umayyad desert establishment contains a reception hall and baths renowned for their murals. The note depicts the exterior, with the connected roof forms and squat masonry visible in the brown engraving.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, P-28a is the 1995 Jardaneh–al-Nabulsi printing of the revised half-dinar design. The 1997 version retains the imagery but changes the signatories. In the revised family, the reverse adds the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan wording above the central bank's name, a useful distinction when comparing nearby Hussein-era issues.
