ThemeArt & Music

Kurmangazy's brown portrait turns toward a mausoleum complex, joining musical memory to the architecture of the Kazakh steppe.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Composer and dombra performer Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly appears in a finely modelled brown portrait. Kazakh inscriptions and the five-tenge value form a compact frame, while a solid security thread crosses the back-to-back E-pattern watermark. The narrow format keeps the musician's face dominant without losing the surrounding engraved detail.

Reverse

A mausoleum complex occupies the back beneath Kazakh text and the national emblem. Low domes and architectural masses replace the intimate portrait with a broader cultural landscape. Brown engraving unifies monument and ornament, allowing the reverse to extend Kurmangazy's personal legacy into the historic environment of Kazakhstan.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this variety retains the 1993 date of the first tenge series but comes from the domestic Banknote Factory printing introduced in 1995. Prefixes AC to AF distinguish it from the earlier Harrison & Sons production. The unchanged Bainazarov signature makes printer and prefix, rather than date alone, essential to correct identification.
