Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Writer and scholar Kasym Tynystanov appears in dark-green engraving within a compact field of Kyrgyz text and denomination devices. His portrait also forms the watermark, giving the sitter a second presence within the paper. A windowed thread with demetallized КЫРГЫЗ БАНКЫ lettering introduces a stronger security structure than the first som series.
Reverse
Mountain ridges and the tract of Dzhety-Oguz stretch across the back in layered green lines. The landscape opens beyond the portrait's formal enclosure and gives depth to the narrow format. Kyrgyz inscriptions remain subordinate to rock, slope and distance, allowing the region itself to carry the cultural association established by Tynystanov's face.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this second-series ten-som note entered circulation on 17 December 1997 with Marat Sultanov's signature. Prefixes BA to BJ define the regular issue, while the portrait watermark and lettered windowed thread mark a clear technical advance from the 1993 notes. It is a concise example of Kyrgyzstan's move toward portrait-and-landscape banknote design.
