Manas rides across a green field with sword and shield before his mausoleum brings the heroic image into architectural stillness.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The mounted statue of Manas the Noble dominates the green face, presenting the epic hero as a fighter with sword and shield. Kyrgyz text and denomination figures follow the movement of horse and rider without crowding the silhouette. The paper has no security thread and carries a repeating eagle-pattern watermark.
Reverse
The Mausoleum of Manas stands alone beneath Kyrgyz inscriptions, replacing the face's martial motion with compact brick architecture. Fine green engraving defines the portal and walls while ornamental value devices hold the scene inside the note's broad format. Hero and memorial therefore occupy separate sides of the same cultural narrative.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the five-som note belongs to Kyrgyzstan's first national-currency issue, introduced on 10 May 1993 without a printed date. Kemelbek Nanaev's signature and regional prefix denominators place it within the original release. Its simple threadless construction and repeating eagle watermark preserve the technical character of the country's earliest som banknotes.
