Timber processing on the front gives way to surgery on the reverse. The brown note moves between industrial production and public healthcare with unusually documentary imagery.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Workers load logs onto machinery in a lumber mill, with the Lao coat of arms placed within the industrial composition. The scene focuses on timber processing and manual labor, giving the front a strong production-oriented identity. Around the main motif, Lao text and denomination numerals complete the printed field.
Reverse
A nurse with a stethoscope appears alongside doctors performing surgery, giving the reverse a distinctly clinical subject. Lao inscriptions frame the medical scene, contrasting sharply with the heavy industrial work shown on the front. The design is held together by brown tones that continue across image, text and denomination.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this replacement sits within the first post-reform Lao kip series and captures the practical, institution-focused character of the new currency. The note belongs to a period when production and public services were central to the visual language of the Lao PDR.
