Three women and Wat That Luang give the front a human and cultural focus; cattle grazing under power lines shift the reverse toward rural development. Purple printing gives the note a calm, spacious character.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Three women form the human focus of the front beside Wat That Luang in Vientiane, with Lao inscriptions and the national emblem arranged around them. The composition gives equal weight to everyday people and a landmark closely associated with Lao identity. Its purple tonality carries evenly through the subject, inscriptions and denomination markings.
Reverse
Cattle graze in open countryside as electrical power towers cross the background, bringing traditional rural life and modern infrastructure into the same landscape. Lao inscriptions frame the pastoral scene. The design is held together by purple tones that continue across image, text and denomination.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2003 1,000-kip issue belongs to a long-running design that evolved through the 1990s and into the new century. Its combination of human figures, national heritage and rural electrification shows how Lao banknotes moved away from the overtly revolutionary tone of the early PDR issues while retaining development as a central idea.
