Military movement dominates the front—a tank, marching soldiers and a patrol boat on the Mekong—while the reverse shifts indoors to textile production. Reddish-brown printing ties the two scenes together.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A tank, marching soldiers and a speed boat patrolling the Mekong River create a layered military scene across the front. Trees and the Lao coat of arms complete a composition built around movement, defense and state power. Its reddish-brown tonality carries evenly through the subject, inscriptions and denomination markings.
Reverse
Workers operate inside a textile mill, with rows of machinery turning the reverse into a dense industrial workspace. Lao inscriptions complete a scene centered on organized factory labor. The human scene provides the side’s visual rhythm, while inscriptions and denomination complete the surrounding framework.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 20-kip note is one of the most overtly political designs in the 1979 series. Military mobilization on one side and factory labor on the other place defense and production together in the visual language of the early Lao PDR.
