Light blue, purple, gold and green bring Kaysone Phomvihane and Xieng Thong temple together on the front, while the Seset 2 hydroelectric dam shifts the reverse toward modern infrastructure.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Kaysone Phomvihane is presented beside Xieng Thong temple, with the Lao coat of arms and inscriptions completing a front that combines political memory with Luang Prabang’s architectural heritage. The use of light blue, purple, gold, and green creates a consistent ground for the illustration, official text and value figures.
Reverse
The Seset 2 hydroelectric dam spans the reverse, replacing portraiture and heritage with a direct image of modern power generation. Lao inscriptions and denomination figures are arranged around the infrastructure rather than competing with it. Its light blue, purple, gold, and green tonality carries evenly through the subject, inscriptions and denomination markings.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 2011 issue was created to mark the 36th anniversary of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the birthday of Kaysone Phomvihane. The dual commemoration gives the circulating denomination a clear historical setting, while the hydroelectric reverse continues Laos’s long-running development theme.
