A government store and an elephant logging scene turn this small green note into a snapshot of daily commerce and resource work in the early Lao PDR.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Shoppers and clerks gather around the counter of a government store, with the Lao coat of arms incorporated into the composition. The scene emphasizes ordinary exchange and organized retail life rather than a single portrait or monument. The remaining space combines Lao lettering with clearly repeated indicators of value.
Reverse
Elephants haul timber through a logging scene on the reverse, placing animal power at the center of resource extraction. Lao inscriptions accompany the vignette without interrupting its clear, work-focused composition. Value markings occupy the surrounding space while the animal remains the composition’s unmistakable pictorial focus.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this replacement note belongs to the first series of the reformed Lao kip introduced in December 1979, when the earlier Liberation kip was exchanged at 100 to 1. It reflects the new government’s turn toward everyday economic life and state-building rather than the royal symbolism that had dominated earlier Lao issues.
