Irrigation workers, tractors and power lines establish a productive rural setting on the front, while coffee harvesters on the Bolaven Plateau give the reverse a distinctly Lao agricultural identity.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Workers adjust a large irrigation pipe as tractors and electrical power towers spread across the surrounding farmland. Lao inscriptions and the national emblem sit within a composition focused on organized agricultural development. The use of multicolor creates a consistent ground for the illustration, official text and value figures.
Reverse
Workers harvest coffee beans on the Bolaven Plateau, turning the reverse into a close study of one of Laos’s most characteristic agricultural activities. The scene is direct and work-focused, with little distraction from the harvest itself. Tones of multicolor unify the pictorial subject, lettering and repeated indicators of value.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1988 500-kip issue extends the post-1979 design language into a higher denomination while shifting attention toward irrigation, mechanized farming and coffee production. It forms a chronological link between the first new-kip notes and later development-focused Lao PDR issues.
