Irrigation workers and tractors lead into a coffee harvest on the Bolaven Plateau, giving the 2015 note a clear agricultural rhythm from front to back and deliberately echoing an earlier Lao design.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Workers adjust an irrigation pipe amid tractors and electrical power towers, with the updated Lao coat of arms and the 2015 date incorporated into the layout. The scene remains centered on organized agricultural development. Colour is led by multicolor, extending from the main motif through the surrounding printed detail.
Reverse
Coffee harvesters work across the Bolaven Plateau, preserving the same crop-focused reverse associated with the earlier 500-kip design. Lao inscriptions and denomination figures leave the agricultural scene visually dominant. The printed field uses multicolor to bind the central imagery to the monetary text around it.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this issue is notable because Laos revived a design first seen on the 1988 500-kip note rather than replacing it outright. The updated state emblem and 2015 date show how a familiar development motif remained relevant decades later, linking two distinct phases of the same currency.
