Anjar’s Umayyad ruins face Beirut’s Pigeon Rocks in a purple, orange, blue and green design that moves from built heritage to the Mediterranean coast.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
Columns and arches from the Umayyad palace complex at Anjar dominate the front, with Arabic inscriptions integrated around the archaeological remains. The composition emphasizes the rhythm of the surviving architecture. A purple, orange, blue, and green scheme keeps the separate pictorial and monetary elements within a single visual field.
Reverse
The natural arches of Pigeon Rocks rise offshore from the Raouché Corniche in Beirut. Arabic and French inscriptions frame the coastal scene without crowding the rock formations. The use of purple, orange, blue, and green creates a consistent ground for the illustration, official text and value figures.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1986 date places this low denomination near the end of the old 1964 design family, just before Lebanon’s weakened wartime economy pushed the currency toward much larger denominations. It captures the final years of a format that had remained visually stable for more than two decades.
