Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The front is built around a topographical map of Lebanon, with Arabic inscriptions arranged around the national outline and terrain. The map replaces the single-site vignettes used on many earlier denominations. A predominantly blue, green, red, and orange treatment gives the imagery and official lettering a consistent visual register.
Reverse
The reverse brings together the Corinthian columns of the Roman Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek, the Banque du Liban headquarters in Beirut and a cedar tree. Arabic and French inscriptions tie the three motifs into a single national composition. The blue, green, red, and orange palette provides continuity between the illustration, typography and value numerals.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1,000-livre note marks a clear monetary break. Parliament approved 500- and 1,000-livre notes in 1988 as the civil-war economy weakened the currency, placing P-69a at the beginning of a new scale of Lebanese banknotes.
