A dense cultural front brings together the National Museum of Beirut, ancient sculpture and Phoenician imagery, while the reverse opens onto the stone bridge at Nahr al-Kalb.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The National Museum of Beirut forms the architectural backdrop, joined by a kneeling 5th-century BC bull protome from Sidon and an image of Baal standing on a Phoenician silver coin from Byblos. Phoenician inscriptions reinforce the archaeological character of the front. The green, blue, and yellow palette provides continuity between the illustration, typography and value numerals.
Reverse
A Mamluk-era stone footbridge crosses the Nahr al-Kalb, giving the reverse a quieter architectural focus. Arabic and French inscriptions surround the bridge scene. The use of green, blue, and yellow creates a consistent ground for the illustration, official text and value figures.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1986 5-livre note is a late survivor of the original Banque du Liban series. Its reliance on museum objects and Phoenician imagery is especially characteristic of the way these early issues used antiquity to frame Lebanese identity.
