A raging-bull mosaic and the Roman Temple of Bacchus bring Baalbek’s antiquity to the front, while the Citadel of Tripoli dominates the reverse.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
A mosaic of a raging bull and tree accompanies the Corinthian ruins of the Roman Temple of Bacchus at Baalbek. Arabic inscriptions are set around the archaeological composition. The black, brown, green, blue, yellow, and purple colour scheme links the main image with the note’s inscriptions and denomination figures.
Reverse
The Citadel of Tripoli dominates the reverse, presented as a broad fortified landmark beneath Arabic and French inscriptions. The strong silhouette contrasts with the more detailed archaeological front. Colour is led by black, brown, green, blue, yellow, and purple, extending from the main motif through the surrounding printed detail.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1988 50-livre note sits at a turning point. The older archaeological design was still in circulation just as the weakened civil-war economy forced Banque du Liban to introduce 500- and 1,000-livre notes, making this issue part of the transition between two monetary scales.
