Žemaitė's tied headscarf and the timber church at Palūšė bring an intimate rural scale to Lithuania's restored litas.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The writer Žemaitė, Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė, faces the viewer in a plain headscarf. Closely engraved folds frame her face, while the grey-brown portrait rests against a lighter yellow field.
Reverse
St Joseph's wooden church at Palūšė extends across the reverse in warm brown tones. Timber walls, pitched roofs and a separate bell tower distinguish the buildings in this close architectural view. The Vytis shield occupies the open space to the right, between the church ensemble and the pale watermark field.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1994 one-litas note belongs to the first years of the restored currency, but not to its initial release. It entered circulation on 1 March 1994, after one-litas coins had accompanied the litas's return in June 1993. It completes a low-denomination paper group with the two- and five-litas notes.
