Brown and green ornament carries the Maldives from cowrie shells and coconut palms toward the quiet labour of island life.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse combines Maldivian text with cowrie shells, a bunch of coconuts and a dhivehi odi sailing boat in full sail. The composition is dense with maritime and natural references: shells recall older forms of exchange, coconuts point to island agriculture, and the sailing vessel gives movement to the right side of the note. Fine brown borders and green underprint hold these elements within a traditional paper-currency frame.
Reverse
The reverse opens into a village scene beneath trees, where people work near simple houses and chickens move through the foreground. English text and the Maldives Monetary Authority inscription frame the scene, while the pale pink and brown palette softens the everyday setting. After the maritime obverse, the reverse turns inland, presenting rural work as part of the same island economy shaped by sea, land and community.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 10 Rufiyaa note belongs to the late paper chapter of Maldivian currency, just before the older rufiyaa issues gave way to a new monetary landscape. Its E-G prefix range and version without the printer’s name on the back distinguish it within the 2006 / AH1427 issue, while the De La Rue production context, coat of arms watermark and demetalized MMA security thread retain the refined security language of the period. It is a useful type for collectors of Indian Ocean currency and pre-polymer Maldivian paper notes.
