ThemeScience & Medicine

Books, a school slate and a pharmacy emblem give way to two camels, moving from the classroom to an open Sahel landscape.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Textbooks and a chalk slate share the face with a globe, a red cross and the Bowl of Hygieia, whose snake curls around a chalice. These recognisable signs of learning and healthcare are gathered beside the BCEAO sawfish emblem. Pink, orange and purple underprinting lies beneath the illustrated objects.

Reverse

One dromedary stands while a second rests on folded legs, giving the pair distinctly different profiles. The scene depicts the Sahel in Burkina Faso, although this particular banknote carries Mali's country code. Low vegetation and open ground surround the animals; the shared regional design is not a view selected exclusively for Mali.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the D country code identifies Mali within a design used throughout the BCEAO currency area. Serial-date digits 23 and the Sani Yaya–Jean-Claude Brou pairing establish this 2023 printing. The Burkina Faso landscape is therefore not a country identifier: separating the shared imagery from the issuing code is essential when assembling member-state varieties.
