Orange circuitry runs towards a touched screen, then yields to two hippopotamuses standing close together in the grass.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The BCEAO sawfish emblem occupies a broad section of the face, with a tablet, a touching finger and electronic circuits arranged beside it. An outline of Africa appears behind these components. Dense brown linework over an orange ground distinguishes the screen and hand from the surrounding circuit patterns.
Reverse
The hippopotamus pair is drawn at close range, with rounded backs and large heads above a strip of grassland. The vegetation remains light and low around their legs. The animals occupy the same design used for other BCEAO member countries, with a pale watermark field beside the illustrated panel.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this is the 2023 Mali version of the 500-franc type introduced in 2012. Its D code and Yaya–Brou signatures distinguish it from the visually similar Ivorian A-code issue. Comparing country letters within one year reveals the regional structure of the series, whereas collecting only different pictures would miss these separately catalogued national variants.
