Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse is organised around a broad pale watermark field enclosed by angular maroon panels, fine geometric lattices and vertical blue-red ornaments. Arabic inscriptions and the denomination are woven directly into the pattern, while the date and paired signatures occupy the lower central field. Without a portrait or landscape, the design draws its authority from calligraphy, symmetry and the measured repetition of traditional geometric forms.

Reverse

The reverse divides Mauritania’s cultural landscape into distinct scenes. Traditional ardin string instruments occupy the left, while a cow stands before the old mosque tower of Chinguetti at right. A pale central watermark panel separates music from pastoral and architectural imagery, allowing the composition to move from performance and craft to livestock and one of the country’s historic religious settings.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this 28 November 2002 issue is the final dated variant listed for the long-running design and is assigned to the T018-T020 series range. It carries the Signature 9 combination of an unidentified signatory and Ba Seydou Moussa. Giesecke+Devrient printing, the old-bearded-man watermark, security thread and UV fibres across both sides form its principal technical profile. The note was subsequently demonetized.
