ThemeCultural Heritage

The familiar purple Tenochtitlan-and-Xochimilco design gains a new institutional layer through Banco de México’s centenary marking.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Tenochtitlan from Diego Rivera’s mural shares the vertical front with the eagle from the Teocalli de la Guerra Sagrada and the gold-to-green denomination feature. The centenary inscription beneath the Banco de México monogram identifies the design as part of the bank’s 1925–2025 anniversary issue.

Reverse

Xochimilco’s river-and-lake ecosystem returns with a corn field and the Mexican axolotl set within the vertical landscape. The reverse remains unchanged in subject, preserving the ecological identity of the original 50-peso design beneath the new commemorative context. Tones of purple unify the pictorial subject, lettering and repeated indicators of value.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this version is more than a repeated design: the 100th-anniversary marking turns an already acclaimed circulation note into a dated institutional commemorative, while the Omar Mejía Castelazo signature creates a distinct variety within that centenary issue.
