ThemeCultural Heritage

Ancient Tenochtitlan, the sacred-war eagle and Xochimilco’s waterways are retained in a centenary issue that overlays familiar imagery with the history of Banco de México itself.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The vertical front preserves the Tenochtitlan scene from Diego Rivera’s La Gran Tenochtitlan and the eagle motif from the Teocalli de la Guerra Sagrada. Beneath the bank monogram, the 1925–2025 anniversary inscription distinguishes the commemorative issue from the earlier circulation form. A predominantly purple treatment gives the imagery and official lettering a consistent visual register.

Reverse

A corn field, waterways and the Mexican axolotl define the Xochimilco ecosystem on the reverse. The natural scene is left visually intact, allowing the anniversary treatment on the front to carry the institutional message without weakening the original design. Across the side, purple tones connect the subject with the denomination and institutional inscriptions.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the Jonathan Heath Constable signature makes this a separate centenary signature variety within a design already familiar from regular circulation. That combination of continuity and narrowly defined variety is exactly what makes the anniversary run worth separating in a structured set.
