Ștefan cel Mare and the Church of St. Demetrius return in a modernised blue 5 Lei note whose 2015 date conceals a later chapter in Moldova’s banknote programme.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse combines Ștefan cel Mare’s crowned portrait with the national coat of arms, BNM emblem, Victory symbol and CINCI LEI denomination. Pale blue and violet security ornament replaces the plainer framework of earlier printings, while the overall dimensions and familiar portrait-led identity remain deliberately continuous.

Reverse

The Church of St. Demetrius in Orhei occupies the reverse within a finely detailed blue architectural vignette. Its tower rises above surrounding trees, bordered by BANCA NAȚIONALĂ A MOLDOVEI, CINCI LEI and interlaced national ornament. Modern registration and security elements are integrated around the established religious motif.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-21A carries the specimen year 2015 but was introduced into circulation only in December 2017, later than the first group of modernised Moldovan notes. That delayed introduction makes it a distinct chapter within the security upgrade programme and separates it clearly from both the earlier P-9 series and the other 2015-dated low denominations.
