Warm orange and brown engraving places Damdinii Sükhbaatar beside Mongolia’s socialist state emblem, giving the low denomination a sober mid-century authority.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The front combines a portrait of Damdinii Sükhbaatar with the socialist coat of arms and Cyrillic Mongolian inscriptions. Fine engraved ornament keeps the political imagery formal and tightly structured. The printed field uses orange and brown to bind the central imagery to the monetary text around it.
Reverse
Dense guilloche work and Mongolian text replace portraiture on the back, creating a restrained ornamental field focused on security engraving rather than a pictorial scene. The use of orange and brown creates a consistent ground for the illustration, official text and value figures.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1955 issue marks an important textual shift in Mongolian currency: the traditional script of the preceding series was replaced by Cyrillic while Sükhbaatar and the socialist emblem remained central to state imagery.
