The spare brown one-tögrög design survives into 1983 almost unchanged, its socialist coat of arms carrying a visual language first established nearly two decades earlier.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The socialist coat of arms remains the sole major pictorial element on the front, surrounded by Mongolian inscriptions and restrained brown engraving. The absence of a portrait gives the denomination a distinctly emblematic character. A controlled typographic framework holds the value and official text around the main illustrated feature.
Reverse
Guilloche work and Mongolian text structure the reverse without a separate scene or portrait. The treatment closely follows the 1966 issue, underscoring how little the type changed by 1983. Official inscriptions and denomination figures are distributed around the main imagery, creating a clear hierarchy across the printed field.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1983 printing is notable less for a new design than for the longevity it documents: the compact one-tögrög type introduced in 1966 remained in use deep into Mongolia’s late socialist period.
